Copyright Chart

The information on copyrights is vast, complex and fragmented and especially challenging when it is addressed by non-experts. At inDICEs a vast research has been conducted to scope the legal framework that is relevant for working with digital cultural heritage. Understandably, the theoretical outcomes of this research would be too overwhelming for heritage professionals to master and analyse. With this Copyright Chart output we are making an effort to structuralise our findings, link them to existing resources on copyright in the cultural sector and provide a basic guidance for heritage professionals where to look when dealing with specific topics in their daily work.

Based on research done by inDICEs and resources that are available through many different outlets with this chart we provide a basic guide of how to navigate the complex IPR legislation that is relevant for cultural heritage institutions and their daily work. We offer a two-way approach, brought to you in two scenarios. The first is a linear collection management based point of view following the Guidelines on Empowering IPR (D3.3). In this scenario the work is done inside the institution, the activities are focused on the internal pathway an object or a collection undergoes. At step 8 ‘Allowing/Encouraging Rese’ we step into the second scenario.

The second pathway is the approach of creating services and products as heritage organisations based on the value chain model. This scenario is aimed at participation and co-creation and extended collaboration with external partners, which requires a different understanding of copyright management.

In both scenarios we provide a context and theoretical background focused on CHI practice, followed by a set of references to existing resources and/or recommendations that we have developed through research at inDICEs.
