The scientific motivations that led to the conceptual map of the “8 Impact Areas” of active digital cultural participation were developed by the researchers and partners of the inDICEs project. A set of analyses were carried out to assess the role that digital technologies play in promoting and facilitating cultural participation. The most important take-away is that cultural institutions need to consider the necessity of creating the conditions and environment for truly inclusive active participation, evidenced by the impacts that these processes generate not only face-to-face but also online and as a result of hybrid interactions.

The 8 Impact Areas are different thematic areas at the intersection of cultural heritage and participation that should be used to guide CHIs in developing goals, objectives, and measuring impact.
