I was able to find exactly that two hours further up the road at the coastal community of Kaikoura. I check into the Hapuku Lodge, which is located in the middle of the Pacific Ocean surf and snow-capped crags. Four freestanding rooms are elevated 32 feet into the canopy of the forest, next to the hotel's rustic lobby and the solitary suite located on the main level. These rooms combine the mature elegance of a treehouse with the whimsical allure of a treehouse from your youth. From the coziness of my bathtub, I watch as the sky darkens, painting the ridges of Tapuae-o-9,500-foot Uenuku's peak in colors that cannot be described.
